Elon Musk reaches a new milestone: Total assets equal to Bill Gates and Warren Buffett combined

Tram Ho

CNBC reported that Elon Musk is constantly rising in the ranking of world billionaires. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX is currently not only the richest person in the world, but his wealth is also worth as much as the fortunes of billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffett combined.

Specifically, the net worth of Musk – a 50-year-old man is $ 230 billion as of Friday morning, according to Bloomberg statistics. Gates is in fourth place with $130 billion and Buffett is 10th with $102 billion.

Both Gates and Buffett previously held the title of the world’s richest person. Musk first surpassed Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to become the richest person in the world in January this year with a net worth of $185 billion. Bezos has held the title since 2017.

Musk has added more than $60 billion of his own this year thanks to the strong performance of Tesla stock as well as the recent sale of shares in SpaceX, valuing the company at $100 billion. According to Bloomberg, the SpaceX deal added $11 billion to Musk’s net worth.

Bezos is currently the second richest person on earth with a net worth of $191 billion. Since surpassing Jeff Bezos as the richest man in the world, Elon Musk has mocked the Amazon founder more than once.

Accordingly, the Tesla CEO responded to a tweet by Bezos last week with a silver medal icon. The move comes at a time when the wealth gap between the two billionaires widened a lot last week as SpaceX’s value surged. That helps Elon Musk’s fortune now reach $222 billion, while Jeff Bezos’s similar figure is $190.8 billion according to Bloomberg calculations.

The public sarcasm between Musk and Bezos comes as both billionaires are working to revolutionize the space industry.

Of course, Gates and Buffett would be significantly closer to Musk in the wealth rankings if not for their philanthropic activities. Both have donated tens of billions of dollars to charities over the years. Meanwhile, Musk has been criticized for not giving away more of his vast fortune.

Recently, Forbes magazine has ranked billionaires (Forbes 400) based on many parameters and one of them is the percentage of charitable donations based on total net worth.

Surprisingly, the two richest billionaires in the world today, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, only donate 1% of their total wealth to charity.

Specifically, Forbes ranks billionaires on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the percentage of their wealth they give to charity. Rank 1 is the billionaires who give less than 1% of their total wealth, 2nd is 1-4.99%, 3rd is 5-9.99%, 4th is 10-19.99% and last 5 is over 20%.

Please note that Forbes does not count contributions to private funds that do not disclose the amount used, which is often suspected of being a tool for the rich to evade taxes.

With the above scoring method, both CEO Bezos and founder Elon Musk ranked 1st, partly due to their huge fortune. Then CEO Mark Zuckerberg came in at No. 2. This year, Musk also pledged $150 million — including a $100 million prize in a carbon removal contest.
