Elon Musk criticizes Bill Gates’ understanding of AI “limited”

The story originates from a tweet by Twitter user Sandy Kory with content praising Bill Gates’ leadership at Microsoft and his approach to AI. Sandy quotes a passage from Bill Gates’ article “The Age of AI Has Begun”. In this article, Bill Gates outlines the implications and potential of AI for jobs, healthcare, and education.

“As computing power becomes more accessible, GPT’s capabilities will become more and more like having an office worker ready to help you with a variety of tasks. Microsoft describes this as having a Fully integrated into products like Office, AI will improve your work by helping you write emails or manage your inbox,” quote from Bill Gates article.

An interesting detail revealed by Bill Gates is that he has been meeting the OpenAI development team since 2016. “It’s amazing that someone like Gates is so optimistic about AI. It’s also remarkable that Microsoft cares so much about AI. AI for a long time,” commented user Sandy Kory.

However, it seems that Elon Musk does not agree with Sandy’s statement. The billionaire replied: “I remember the first meetings with Gates. His understanding of AI was still limited. Even now.”

Elon Musk started working with OpenAI in 2015 and was one of the company’s earliest investors, which led to meetings with the Microsoft co-founder. He left the company in 2018 due to a conflict of interest from Tesla also working on artificial intelligence.

Most recently, this past February, Elon Musk said that OpenAI was created as a non-profit, open source company, so “Open” was included in the name. But now it is a closed-source, profit-maximizing company controlled by Microsoft, and this goes against the original intention.

In fact, Elon Musk and Bill Gates have repeatedly expressed opposing views in the past. The two billionaires first quarreled in 2020, when they disagreed about the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic. That same year, Elon Musk said his “conversation with Bill Gates didn’t go well” after Bill Gates said he decided to buy a Porsche Taycan instead of a Tesla. The Tesla CEO has also accused Bill Gates of shorting shares of the car company and even mocked him about his appearance.
