Don’t be fooled: these photos don’t have any color at all!

What do you see in the image below? The bizarre visual illusion of this photo is making the Internet go crazy because it turns a normal black-and-white photo into a color image. For some people, the color may not be very clear, and what they see is just unpleasant colored lines running around the picture. But for many others, it is clear that the girls in the picture are wearing yellow, red, blue and green shirts! Which group are you in?

The image was created by computer graphics artist and software developer Øyvind Kolås fooling our brain, making it automatically “fill in the blank”: when looking at photos, the brain will get color information sharp on colored lines to predict the color of the rest of the image. Kolas calls this experiment “color assimilated mesh illusion”, and as mentioned above, it is simply a grid of colored lines placed on top of a black and white photo.

A color grid with high saturation is superimposed on a black-and-white image, making black and white cells look like colored boxes,” Kolas said on his blog.

Not only the grid can create the other illusion, even though the grid will make many people fooled. Colored dots and colored lines also create the same effect, in which colored lines appear to produce stronger color hallucinations than colored dots.

This illusion can even apply to videos, you can see the example below:
