Disabling Internet Explorer is inevitable

Tram Ho

First released in 1995 for computer devices using the Windows operating system, Internet Explorer browser (abbreviated as IE) has a total of 11 versions. The last version was released in 2013, 10 years ago. After nearly 30 years of operation, this browser has become obsolete, so Microsoft is forced to take actions to remove IE.

According to the global general record, the outdated IE browser should become sluggish, less “smart” than many other browsers. This has caused users to automatically switch to new browsers and no longer use IE as often as 10 years ago.

Currently, for desktop, when the user clicks on the IE (Internet Explorer) icon, the software doesn’t start and the screen suggests the user to use the Microsoft Edge browser.

In 2015, Microsoft announced that it would replace Internet Explorer with Microsoft Edge as the default browser for Windows 10. In June 2022, Microsoft had official information about “death” of Internet Explorer. However, until the update released on February 14, Windows 10 users were completely blocked from accessing this browser. With this update, all devices that try to open Internet Explorer will redirect to the Microsoft Edge web browser.

As announced by Microsoft, the Microsoft Edge browser will provide a faster, more secure and modern web experience than Internet Explorer. However, according to recent data published by Stacounter, Edge accounts for just over 4% of global computer usage compared to today’s most popular browser, Google Chrome, with over 65% usage.

In the past, IE used to be the default web browser on Windows. It was this that helped IE become the most popular web browser in the world, accounting for 94% of the user market in 2002 and 2003. At that time, alternatives such as Mozilla’s Firefox or Safari’s were available. Apple is new and few people use it.

At the moment, Google’s Chrome is dominating with 65% of the worldwide browser market share. Then there’s Apple’s Safari with 19%, according to research data from Statcounter. The successor to Internet Explorer is Microsoft Edge, ranked third with 4% market share, right above Mozilla’s Firefox.

Disabling internet browsers has happened before (eg Netscape, Mosaic…). Ms. Nguyen Thanh Loan (Hai Ba Trung district, Hanoi) said: Quitting IE browser does not affect the use of personal computers (laptops), mobile phones of her family. At work, the desktop computer uses this browser, so updating and changing the browser will be in charge of the technician. Individual users are not affected by this change.

On computers and smart devices, there are many browsers for users to choose from. With many similar features between available browsers, removing or not using a browser does not affect users much.

In fact, many government online public service sites in some countries (such as Japan) currently only support Internet Explorer. In this case, the user will not be able to use the services on IE, and at the same time, when accessing the website with other browsers, there will be display errors, inaccessibility, and inability to use the functions of the web browsers.
