- Tram Ho
Adjusting display settings on a new computer is easy. It is important that you know how to adjust the brightness on Windows because if you suffer from eye strain or headaches, screen brightness could be the culprit. Fortunately, you can adjust the brightness levels for your computer screen manually or automatically based on parameters, as well as battery life or ambient light.

Whether you want to reduce or increase the light on your computer screen in Windows, you will have 9 ways to do it, specifically as follows.
1. Change screen brightness from Settings
Here’s an easy way you can control screen brightness in Windows, it’s from Settings. Specifically:

Go to Settings > System > Display. Use the Change brightness slider. Moving to the left will make the screen dimmer, while moving to the right will make the screen brighter.
2. Change the brightness directly on the computer screen
No need to install apps, no need to change Windows settings, just press a button. How you access the settings menu and adjust the brightness varies from manufacturer to monitor.
Some manufacturers choose to use a small joystick located at the bottom of the screen, while other manufacturers prefer to use buttons.

To avoid making unwanted changes or spending time trying to change the monitor’s settings manually, use the included monitor manual.
Using the monitor’s buttons to adjust the brightness is a simple and effective way. But sometimes this method is not good enough. If the setup has two or three external monitors, you will have to change the settings for each monitor which takes a long time.
3. Using the Windows Mobility Center tool
At first, Windows Mobility Center was integrated by Microsoft on Windows Vista and in Windows 7 and 8, this feature was upgraded and improved. And now you can easily navigate and customize your laptop’s hardware functions like display settings, volume, battery and power status, wireless connectivity and more.

Depending on the laptop manufacturer, the Windows Mobility Center may display its own customization options or default to Windows. For example, Toshiba added several panels for Lock Computer and the Toshiba Assist support utility. Other vendors rename some of these panels, like Dell using the name Display Settings instead of the Brightness panel.
By default, Windows Mobility Center is only added when users install Windows on a laptop or mobile device. On the desktop side, they just received a message saying that the feature only supports laptops.
4. Use the Display Driver Control Panel of the graphics card you are using
Computer graphics card manufacturers often have their own control and management tools built-in so that you can control the card’s features. And they are often bundled with drivers, which appear right after you install them. AMD and Nvidia are the two typical companies that have these tools.

To start the Display Driver Control Panel of the graphics card you are using, make sure you have the full card driver installed for Windows. Then you double click on the small logo of the card in the system tray.

Here you will be provided with options to adjust the brightness and color intensity for the screen as well.
5. Automatically adjust brightness to save battery
If you use a laptop, it is recommended that you adjust the screen brightness to the lowest level possible, because it will save a lot of battery, and above all, reduce eye strain a lot if working for a long time. .

Windows allows the computer screen to automatically dim the light to save battery. By default, Windows sets the limit to 20%. you can change this value as you like. If yes, please enable it
6. Adjust screen brightness when using power
You can set different screen brightness levels on your laptop or tablet based on whether or not your device is plugged in. For example, you can set the screen brightness to high when the computer is plugged into an electrical outlet and low when the computer is only using power from the battery. Windows will then automatically adjust the screen brightness according to your settings. To do so, open Control Panel and navigate to Power Options, select Change plan settings.

Here, you can set different screen brightness levels for battery usage situations and plug in the power directly. Once the setup is done, everything will be saved and you can switch between the built-in Windows default settings or the ones you create yourself.
7. Use keyboard shortcuts
Most laptops are equipped with keyboards with function buttons F1-F12. Those are shortcuts to help quickly perform some operations, including increasing and decreasing screen brightness. All you need to do is find and press the right combination of keys. Look for an icon that corresponds to the brightness – usually a sun symbol with a plus “+” and a minus “-“, or something similar.

Then you need to find the Function (Fn) button, which is usually located near the bottom left corner of the keyboard, next to the Ctrl button. Press and hold the Fn button and one of the two function buttons corresponding to the previously found screen brightness increase and decrease.
8. Use Quick Selection in Action Center
You can also adjust the screen brightness from the Action Center interface. This is especially useful if the device you’re using doesn’t have a keyboard (like a tablet), or has a keyboard but doesn’t include the aforementioned function keys.

For Windows 10, click the battery icon in the notification area and click the brightness box that appears. This click will adjust the screen brightness in 25% increments per click.

In case if your Windows does not have this option, you can use the Windows 10 Brightness Slider tool to enable it.
9. Change Brightness in Command Prompt
If you want, you can change your screen brightness with commands in the Command Prompt.

Although the other methods listed above are more intuitive, you can use this method if they are not available for some reason.
In case it is not possible to adjust the screen brightness from the Windows interface
Screen brightness issues from the Windows interface on your computer are often related to display drivers and other power settings that you may or may not be aware of.
If Windows doesn’t allow you to adjust the brightness on your computer, here are the first two areas to check in addition to trying the usual common fixes like restarting your computer or updating Windows.
