Canon is incubating a new focus system, promising to replace the manual focus ring on camera lenses?

Camera lenses’ focus rings may soon be a thing of the past. But that is if the camera giant Canon’s new patent is approved and highly applicable.

This patent was first discovered by Canon News showing a new lens using a touchpad control panel instead of the traditional manual focus ring.

The profile written in Japanese specifically focuses on using touch to replace the focus ring, which has been a staple of professional photography for decades.

It’s not too hard to imagine how this technology will be applied. Because navigating the camera menu and controlling AF points with this technology is almost the same as on smartphones.

Canon’s new design proposes using a small, circular touch panel capable of recognizing thumb movements clockwise or vice versa. In this way, it allows users to hold the camera naturally without having to rotate the focus ring as before.

The touch panel will be equipped with its own processor to handle the user’s touch operations and transmit commands to the machine.

Canon’s idea was to be able to remove the manual focus ring and replace it with a modern direction, suitable for today’s scene.

Of course, not all patent concepts can be turned into reality, especially if Canon’s improved focus-ring replacement touch panel does not get well received if it launches.

However, since Canon is one of the most famous camera manufacturers in the world, we will not be surprised to see that photographers can get acquainted with this new technology feature soon.
