A nuclear energy startup backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has just raised more than $ 100 million to help develop fusion technology and build an atomic power plant.
Startup General Fusion in Canada hopes to commercialize fusion technology to generate electricity, the same kind of energy as stars' cores or a hydrogen bomb.
Nuclear fusion, or fusion, or fusion is the process of two nuclei fusing together to form a new heavier nucleus. Along with this process is the release of energy or absorption of energy depending on the mass of the participating nucleus.
In theory, this process can release huge amounts of energy. The fusion reaction can provide huge amounts of energy at a cheap price, while producing much less nuclear waste than fission – the process used in conventional nuclear power plants.
By fusing hydrogen atoms together under heat and pressure, a fusion reactor produces heavier atomic helium, releasing energy. Theoretically, this energy is safer and cleaner than conventional nuclear reactors, but it requires a large amount of energy to create a heated plasma.
General Fusion found a new way to build its own thermonuclear reactor, with hundreds of pistons surrounding the plasma source to create great pressure. This method is much cheaper than normal, but has not yet been tested on a large scale.
General Fusion CEO Christofer Mowry said that if this technology is commercialized, it will be a completely new energy revolution, completely changing the global energy industry.
