Twitter began large-scale staff cuts around the world on November 4, expecting about a quarter of its more than 7,500 employees to be laid off.

Twitter’s new owner is said to want to significantly reduce costs at the company after completing its $44 billion acquisition of the social networking platform last week. Billionaire Musk believes that “must pay the bills somehow”.

Billionaire Elon Musk quoted the head of safety Yoel Roth’s post on Twitter: “Although we said goodbye to incredibly talented friends and colleagues yesterday, the ability to Our primary censorship remains in place”.

According to the PA news agency (UK), the richest person in the world added: “Once again, it should be clearly stated that Twitter’s strong commitment to content moderation has not changed at all.”

Musk previously accused “groups of activists” of pressuring advertisers to leave the social media giant and causing a drop in revenue.

The Tesla owner wrote: “Twitter will not censor accurate information about anything.” Online safety groups and campaigners have expressed concern about Mr Musk’s plan to allow free speech on Twitter and “unlock” the Twitter accounts of controversial figures, including including former US President Donald Trump.

Simon Deakin, a law professor at the University of Cambridge, said that if 100 or more employees are laid off within a 90-day period, the Commerce Secretary must be notified 45 days before the first layoff.

In case there are more than 20 to less than 100 employees being laid off, the notice period is 30 days.

“If no effective notice is given here then fines can be imposed, so the employer or the director can be fined,” Prof Deakin said. According to Deakin, if about 100 employees were laid off, the employer could face criminal charges, but Mr Deakin added he was not clear about the full extent of the incident and whether the matter had been reported.

Earlier, Twitter employees received an internal email announcing the layoffs on November 4, saying that “this is essential to ensure the future success of the company”.
