Australia spends 700 million USD to protect the Great Barrier Reef
- Tram Ho
Australia announced the plan a few months after the reef had just escaped the risk of being put on the “at risk” list by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Before that, in 2015, the country made a plan called “Coral 2050” and spent billions of dollars to protect this natural population.
These measures are believed to have helped slow down the coral reef’s degradation, but parts of this population have already been damaged.
A new study finds coral bleaching has affected 98% of the Great Barrier Reef since 1998, leaving only a small fraction unaffected.
