As a competitor, Microsoft is helping make Chrome better

Tram Ho

As rivals in the search engine and cloud markets, as well as competing in the web browser market, it’s hard to believe that Microsoft is now one of the major contributors to the improve the quality of Google Chrome browser.

This can be seen starting when Microsoft decided to stop using the EdgeHTML engine for its Edge browser, instead of the Chromium kernel – an open source browser project. Ever since the transition, Microsoft – an enemy of the open source community – has been contributing code to fix bugs and add new features to the Chromium project.

Thanks to that, not only Edge browser benefits but also rival Chrome browser too.

One of Microsoft’s most significant contributions to Chrome is its ability to reduce power consumption on laptops. When the laptop is detected using a battery, the browser will stop saving unnecessary files to the drive when users watch online videos.

Microsoft also found a cure for RAM-hogging disease, which is becoming an obsession for Chrome browser.

In the recent update of Windows 10, Microsoft has improved Segment Heap memory management, to optimize RAM usage of system applications as well as browsers. This has helped Edge use up to 27% less RAM than before.

Witnessing this incredible improvement, a Google engineer said last month that it was also planning to update Chrome with a feature similar to Edge, to reduce the amount of memory it uses. Although not as high savings as Edge, it will significantly improve Chrome’s long-term RAM.

Most recently, Microsoft also fixed another problem of Chrome browser: double notification error on Windows 10. The message will appear twice and if you click on the error message, the browser will not open the page. The web has sent a notification to Chrome. It’s an annoying and annoying problem that many people have and Microsoft has overcome it.

There are many other examples of Microsoft trying to make Chrome a better browser – even indirectly – by making a contribution to the Chromium browser. This is a strange thing considering that Microsoft and Google are still competing in the browser market, but this is still a very praiseworthy thing.

Not only does it share the same browser core with competitors, it also shows an increasingly warmer relationship between Microsoft and the open source community. Not only does Linux support the Windows 10 operating system, Microsoft is also actively involved in open source projects, even if this also benefits their opponents.
