Apple made $ 360 million from Fortnite before removing it from the App Store

Tram Ho

Apple has removed the popular game Fortnite from its App Store. The reason is that Epic Games has introduced a new payment method, in order to avoid having to share 30% of revenue with Apple. Before being removed from the App Store, Fortnite was one of the golden eggs.

As reported by Business Insider, Apple has made up to 360 million dollars from Fortnite, since the game landed on the iOS platform. That’s the equivalent of spending a total of $ 1.2 billion in this free iOS game, with about 133.2 million downloads.

In the last 30 days or so, Fortnite had 2.4 million downloads on the App Store, and revenue was $ 43.4 million.

When compared to Google’s Play Store, Fortnite generates a lot smaller revenue. That shouldn’t come as a surprise, though, as Fortnite has only been on the Play Store since April 2020.

Fortnite generated $ 10 million in revenue for Google, with around 11 million downloads. In the last 30 days, it was about 2 million downloads and 3.3 million USD.

The above numbers also show the magnitude of the gamble this time, when Epic Games is risking a huge revenue stream from iOS and Android platforms, in exchange for “fairness” – according to what Epic Games declared.

If this war does not produce the desired results, will Epic Games dare to give up Apple forever? The answer is probably no, because even if it has to share 30% of the revenue with Apple, the amount Epic Games makes from Fortnite on iOS is still a huge number.
