Apple does everything well, from hardware to software, services and customer care, but except for one thing that has not been good for the past 10 years. It’s one thing that always annoys and costs people money, which is the iPhone’s charging cable.
Surely most iPhone users have experienced this feeling, when the fragile charging cable breaks, peels off the plastic wrap, and exposes the core inside. Other Apple products are very durable, only the charging cable is extremely fast.
Common status of iPhone and iPad users.
Meanwhile, Apple sells replacement charging cables for a very high price, about $ 19. With this price, users can choose Anker’s charging cables with much higher durability, or choose other cables that cost less than 10 USD but also quite good quality.
Why is Apple’s iPhone charging cable so fragile?
So, why is Apple’s charger accessory so bad, and it can be said that it is not commensurate with the quality of other products? Does Apple intentionally make the cable vulnerable to charge users’ money?
A former Apple employee named Michael McGraw Herdeg once answered this question on Reddit:
“I used to work at Apple and had the opportunity to interact with many parts of the company. I know exactly why this is happening. It is not related to Apple trying to hook users’ money, but because of the power ranks in the company.
Before you get to the main point, look at any charging cable that is not Apple, and you’ll see plastic rings arranged at the junction between the cord and the charger. These circles are called strain relief, its effect is to reduce the force of the impact when the cable is bent. You usually put the smartphone on the table, plug the charger into the socket below, so that creates a folding angle impact on this connection point.
Apple’s charger is aesthetically pleasing, but technical is a disaster.
At Apple, there are many different parts, but the highest authority is the Industrial Design department, which determines the appearance and experience of the products when Apple brings to the user. The reason Industrial Design is the most powerful department is because their decision can surpass all other decisions.
And the Industrial Design division thinks the “strain relief” circles that appear on the charging cable will worsen its design. They want the connection point to be cleaner and more aesthetic. Aesthetically, Apple’s charging cables are beautiful. But technically it was a disaster because there were no pressure relief circles. ”
That’s why when you use it for a while, but the iPhone’s charging cable is easily broken. Especially if often broken.
After 10 years, Apple has finally changed
Recently, an image allegedly of the charging cable included in the iPhone 12 box has been leaked. We can see that Apple has changed not to use the rubber charger cable as before, but to use a cable charger that looks solid and sturdier.

As of right now, Apple has yet to sell any umbrella models for the iPhone and iPad. The newly wrapped umbrella cable is said to be more durable than the previous rubber charging cable. No more peeling and cracking easily after a few months of use.
What iFans have been screaming for 10 years has finally been heard and changed by Apple. However, it can be seen that, on the charging cable that covers the iPhone’s umbrella (white), Apple still does not use the pressure-reducing circles. The design of the connection point between the cable and the charger remains the same.
It can be seen that, despite being subject to change from rubber cable to umbrella cable, but Apple retains its old design opinion. So we will have to wait and see how these cables can actually wrap, although they can be many times more durable than previous rubber charging cables.
