Apple continues to use Qualcomm’s 5G modem, and the 2021 iPhone line will use the Snapdragon X60 chip modem

Tram Ho

In April 2019, Apple and Qualcomm announced their agreement to end the persistent legal battle between the two companies in all markets, paving the way for Apple to continue using Qualcomm’s 5G modem on the iPhone 12 series. and possibly later.

A abdominal surgery video recently posted on the Weibo network, China shows an L-shaped logic board and modem chip name. It turns out that Apple is using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 5G modem chip on the iPhone 12 series.

Macrumors also recently discovered the roadmap to integrate 5G chip modems from Qualcomm in Apple products in the future.

According to Twitter account Danny Walsh revealed, in page 71 of the Apple-Qualcomm settlement filing, Apple plans to launch new products equipped with Snapdragon X60 modem from June 1, 2021 to May 31. / 2022.

Apple is also committed to using the X65 and X70 modems in products released from June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2024. That means Apple will continue to use modem chips from Qualcomm until at least 2024.

Earlier rumors suggested that Apple would use the X55 modem for the iPhone 12 series, and at that time, the X55 was Qualcomm’s newest and fastest 5G chip modem. In February 2020, Qualcomm introduced the X60 modem running on the 5nm process, which is more power efficient than the 7nm process X55.

Qualcomm’s modem chip appears on the board of the iPhone 12

There are many speculations that Apple may bring the X60 modem to the ‌iPhone 12‌ line. But because the X60 was released quite late, it was difficult to bring up the ‌iPhone 12‌ in time.

Next year’s iPhones will likely use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X60 5G modem chip. This is the third generation 5G modem chip manufactured by Qualcomm. It delivers notable performance improvements, especially reducing battery consumption, size, connection speed, and dual-band mmWave and sub-6GHz support for carriers.

Earlier, due to the climax between Apple and Qualcomm, Apple used Intel chips for the iPhone 11 lineup.

However, after the settlement was settled, Apple returned to using Qualcomm’s technology for the iPhone 12 series when it learned that Intel could not supply enough 5G modem chips that Apple needed. Perhaps that is why Apple has accepted humility in the protracted legal battle with Qualcomm to gain access to Qualcomm’s chip technology.
