Amazfit brings ChatGPT to smart watch – Experience like in a sci-fi movie

Tram Ho

ChatGPT is still continuing to “sideway” in the technology industry and a new frontier it has just crossed is the smart watch. Xiaomi’s smartwatch brand Amazfit has revealed it will be adding this generalized AI as a feature on its GTR4 device.

In a demo posted recently on the LinkedIn platform, ChatGPT shows it will be listed as ChatGenius in the menu of the GTR4 product. Touching it from the screen, the user can ask it whatever they want.

The promotional video shows someone asking how they can improve their running performance. Then, within seconds, ChatGenius responds with a multi-paragraph answer that can be read in its entirety by turning the crown on the watch. Tap the screen to delete the previous answer and you can ask a new question. Users can even ask ChatGenius how their day was and it will provide information like steps taken or current heart rate.

However, beyond this demo, there is little information on how ChatGPT will work on Amazfit GTR4. Some other reports claim that users can ask general questions like weather or traffic forecast, just like any other smartwatch. It is also unknown if any other Amazfit devices can be integrated with this feature, or whether the AI can support other data types or will be limited. The demo video suggests that ChatGPT support will depend on the user’s watch model and location, with the US currently the only confirmed region at this time.

However, the fact that Amazfit can beat the tech giants in adding support from generalized AI to smartwatches is a big achievement. The closest thing to ChatGPT on a smartwatch product today is a third-party app called watchGPT, for the Apple Watch.

It also works in such a way that when the user opens the app, asks a question, and the system responds with some text. However, the application requires a fee of 3.99 USD while the feature of Amazfit is free.

In return, users can “share the results of the interaction” with others via text messages, email or social networks. Don’t know if GTR4 can do the same at this point. Either way, Amazfit has succeeded in breaking the boundaries before any other competitor. However, it will only be a matter of time before companies like Apple or Google will add general AI support to their own smartwatch models. After all, the technology is now available on browsers and search engines.
