Hybrid cars are waiting to explode in Vietnam with a variety of models and different types of hybrid engine technology, diversifying options for customers.
Hybrid is a hybrid engine technology that has been on the market for a long time, but it will not really be noticeable until 2022 in Vietnam when many popular hybrid cars appear. Most hybrid cars are a combination of a gasoline engine and an electric motor, but there are many different types.
Mild hybrid
Mild hybrid technology, also known as mild hybrid, has been available on many luxury cars for a long time, but now it has just begun to be available on popular cars. Suzuki Ertiga is a typical model using a mild hybrid engine.
The Ertiga hybrid still uses the same 1.5L petrol engine as the petrol version, but has an additional generator and starter with a small 12V lithium-ion battery. This generator works in tandem with the gasoline engine when needed, helping to accelerate and reduce the vehicle’s fuel consumption during operation.
Full hybrid
The popular model that initiated the hybrid movement in Vietnam is the Toyota Corolla Cross. The car is equipped with a Full hybrid (fully hybrid) engine, a combination of a gasoline engine and an electric motor with a Ni-MH battery. After Corolla Cross, Toyota also brought back Camry and Corolla Altis with hybrid engine.
With a fully hybrid engine, the electric motor has a larger capacity, the battery has a higher capacity. In the low speed range, the car can run on the electric motor, completely shutting down the gasoline engine.
The Nissan Kicks is also equipped with a hybrid engine, but the way it works is slightly different from the Toyota hybrids. The e-Power engine on Kicks has an electric motor that drives directly to the wheels, while the gasoline engine is a generator that generates electricity and charges the battery.
Plug-in hybrid
Plug-in hybrid is a hybrid technology with a charging port. Two typical models in Vietnam equipped with Plug-in hybrid are Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe.
Compared to the Full hybrid, Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) have a charging port to plug the power into the battery like a fully electric vehicle. As on the Sorento, the electric motor comes with a 13.8 kWh battery pack, allowing the car to go all-electric up to nearly 70 km. That is the superiority of this plug-in hybrid compared to the normal hybrid.
