Ransomware is becoming a bigger and bigger problem. The US government is focusing its efforts on measures against these ransomware, and now, there is a report that the ransomware problem has a strong relationship with Windows.
Based on ransomware files that VirusTotal analyzed for its October 2021 report, 95% of them are for Windows PCs. More than 2% are aimed at Android and the remaining targets account for only a very small percentage.
“According to our research, 95% of ransomware files detected are Windows-based executables or dynamic link libraries (DLLs). Meanwhile, 2% is based on Android , ” VirtusTotal wrote.
Even so, this news may not come as a surprise to Windows users, whose operating system keeps popping up with reports of ransomware. Recently, there’s LockFile, which targets Microsoft Exchange servers. There is even a ransomware threat in Windows printing operations.
The ransomware threat isn’t going away anytime soon, which is why it’s even currently being considered by Microsoft in enterprise coverage.
Based on the number of analyses, Israel, South Korea, Vietnam, China, Singapore, India, Kazakhstan, Philippines, Iran and the United Kingdom emerge as the ten most affected territories/countries.
