8 inventions help the whole world understand how great people of black color: They will not appear without them

Tram Ho

The story of discrimination flared up after the death of George Floyd – an African-American victim who died under a pillow knee for more than 8 minutes by the Minneapolis police. Floyd’s death sparked countless protests across the United States, then spread to many Western nations in Europe.

All lives are equally precious, but racism for so long has made that saying lose its value. People of color have long suffered from discrimination, both in status, interests and the conduct of everyday communication. But perhaps many people don’t know that without the colored people, the many inventions and utilities we are using today will never exist.

1. VoIP – Voice transmission system on Internet protocol

It sounds complicated, but basically when you make a call through applications like Skype, Facetime, Google Hangouts … it is VoIP. And the inventor of VoIP is Dr. Marian Croak. Ba is Google’s vice president of engineering, and also a black person.

Dr. Croak has been honored as the foundation and developer of the VoIP system – a system that allows users to communicate by voice or image via the internet. Currently, nearly every feature of VOIP is developed by Croak, and it is applicable to countless other platforms around the globe.

2. GPS

When you arrive at an unfamiliar new location, how do you find your way? If you simply open your phone and look up the map, you owe Dr. Glady West a thank you. More precisely, the whole world must thank Dr. West, a black woman, for saving us most of the time to locate and find our way.

West graduated from a male-dominated university, then worked at the Naval Surface Combat Center, and was one of only four black women to work there. Her mission is to analyze data from satellites, synthesized in the shape of the Earth. Eventually, she programmed an IBM computer to create an even more accurate computing system – the basis of today’s GPS.

3. Indoor heating

In tropical countries it’s hard to feel, but in the West – especially in temperate regions, winter for them is a terrifying experience. There was a time when people had to hoard firewood at the end of summer and fall to survive the harsh snowy winters.

But today, big cities in the West no longer have to worry about this problem, because almost every home is equipped with automatic heating. And the one who broke that worry was Alice H. Parker – a black woman.

After World War I, Parker found a way to keep his home warm without having to burn a fireplace. On December 23, 1919, Parker proposed the design of a heating system, using a ventilation tube to conduct heat throughout the house from a natural gas combustion chamber. The system allows you to control the heat throughout an entire building, paving the way for the development of modern heating that humans use today.

4. Animations (GIF images)

Netizens today use animated images (GIFs) to express their emotions a lot, just like a routine. Sometimes a story, just drop in a reasonable GIF is more than enough for friends to laugh to tear the mouth.

If you are also among those who are passionate about GIFs, you need to thank Lisa Gelopter – a black computer expert. At CompuServe, Gelopter laid the foundations for GIF images, developing an extremely optimized animation system for the whole world to use comfortably today.

In addition, there are many other inventions applied in countless areas of life today, and their authors are women of color.

5. Iron

The author of the table you use for ironing every morning is Sarah Boone – a black inventor.

6. Sanitary pads

Sisters in the world really need to be grateful to Mary Beatrice Davidson Kenner. She is also of color.

7. Telephone exchange system

An extremely professional system you always hear when calling to any company’s switchboard. Its author is Shirley Ann Jackson, physicist, inventor and also the first black woman to receive a doctorate from the MIT Institute of Technology (United States).

8. 3D movies

Dr. Valerie Thomas – inventor, physicist and data analyst at NASA who laid the foundations for 3D movies. Without her, director James Cameron’s Avartar would never have become a legend.
