The “Digi POS” cash registers are advertised as having “the world’s first” contactless display technology for POS cash registers. On January 28, Japanese convenience store chain 7-Eleven shared a first look at cash registers with interactive screens that are holograms, showing how they work:

Aerial display is still a technology rarely applied in practice. They are mainly used for front desk services in hotels and offices, or as digital signage. According to Toshiba Tec, which is leading the project, this is the first time this technology has been used in a POS system.

All you have to do is scan the product you want to buy, and then the screen will appear floating in the air, only from the perspective of the payer can see the content above, it becomes invisible from other perspectives.

This aerial display is the result of a collaboration between six different companies:

  • Toshiba Tec, the company that created the POS payment system and is responsible for installing them in the stores.
  • 7-Eleven, a convenience store chain, will equip its stores with products and assist customers in using them, and verify their effectiveness.
  • Asukanet Development, which manufactures and sells panels for aerial displays.
  • Kanda Kogyo Development, a company that manufactures and sells aerial display modules.
  • Mitsui Chemicals Development, which manufactures and sells the “Structbond” adhesive used in the system.
  • Mitsui Bussan Plastic, which is engaged in the sale and development of aerial display modules.

The first will have a main screen below, the system is arranged with an inverted reflector to reflect incident light in the same direction, so that the image is projected in the air directly in front of the user. Finally, there is a depth sensor that can detect the spatial position and movement of the user’s finger. This is what will allow users to interact with aerial imagery.
