16 things to do when you “love” your test

Is Software Testing a boring job?

People often communicate each other that, the dating phase, understanding each other is the happiest moment in love. “Marriage is the grave of love,” I believe everyone of us has heard this saying. I don’t know if it is true for every situation, but with the test job, it is probably true. The reason I said that because when I started to set my first steps on the career journey, the tester was very enthusiastic.

They find passion, explore, excitement, want to discover more. But when the learning process comes to a “saturated” time they begin to get bored. They quickly grew tired of writing bug reports and performing similar test cases repeatedly. Imagine the day-to-day prospect of carrying your bag to the company, opening the phone and making a testcase set that repeats it so much to memorize it. Then you simply won’t feel anything interesting anymore. Most testers experience this mood at some point in their career.

Especially experienced testers, they no longer find any challenge and creativity in their work. So, does that mean a test point of view is a boring job?

The answer is no! Testing is not a boring job. In fact it is quite stressful. Michael Bolton has the following citation:

“Testing is continuous learning process by exploring, discovering and investigating the information you have”.

(“Testing is a continuous learning process, by discovering, discovering and investigating the information you have”).

If you have a passion for testing, you will rarely see this as boring work.

At some point, testing can be a monotonous task. But you should accept that certain level of repeatability. Just as you get up in the morning, brush your teeth, wash your face. It keeps going on like that, but you still accept to do it. You can think about automating these repetitive tasks. Be sure to complete the work carefully before deciding on automation. This is not the ultimate solution to solving your depression. You need to find many different ways to bring the difference in your daily work.

If you do a survey, ask any experienced dev around you, he will tell you how boring software development can be. You cannot stop working in a repetitive fashion. As I mentioned earlier, our entire life is just a series of repetitive tasks. Will you stop doing that? Definitely not. We continue to search for and adapt to new things, which helps us to have excitement. You need to find creative ways to do the same thing over and over again. You need to find and analyze why you are sad. Once you grasp the root cause, then you will definitely have a definitive solution.

Suppose that you are experiencing this boring feeling. It may be a temporary emotion, but you need to overcome it and it certainly can’t beat you anymore. How to do that? Here’s what I do when that feeling invades my mind. I think these things will be good for you.

16 things you can do when you’re bored of the test:

  1. We are bored because we no longer see challenges in our daily work. There are many ways to challenge yourself. One way I know best to challenge myself is to find five important errors in a day (or any number that you find challenging).
  2. Stay away from negative people. They certainly have a negative impact on those around them. Don’t immerse yourself in the thoughts of positive people, do the things you care about and see it motivate you.
  3. Get strong inspiration from long-term career goals. Where do you want to stand in the next 5 years? Always think what you do today to get closer to that goal and then take appropriate action.
  4. Improve your skills. Apply with specialized skills on test, or any other soft skills you want to be better like communication skills, time management, team building or problem solving skills.
  5. Write something about the skills you learned from your job. Write a newspaper or guide based on your expertise and share it with your colleagues or all test teams in the company. Do not hesitate to show your own knowledge.
  6. Always reward yourself when you complete the goal (for example, when you complete the TC for the project, complete the TC automation for a module within the specified time …). No matter when it’s small goals, enjoy it.
  7. Coordinate with QA team from other projects. Observe their habits and capture their good things.
  8. If you are an expert in the team, help others to learn more about the concepts of testing and understanding your project more thoroughly.
  9. There are informal discussions with dev. Discuss what they are doing, what they are building, the scripts they are considering to see if there is anything you can contribute to help them understand the product better.
Note: Some devs who don’t like discussing with the tester (maybe something like “evil testers” in their minds) should be polite and respect others in such a case. ).
  10. Reorganize the desk regularly. Clean up stacks of old documents, this should also apply to files and folders on your computer. Organizing everything (time and resources) organized is a habit of successful people.
  11. Do not be stuck in a habit. This should also apply to writing tests or executing test cases, managing team tests or test reports. Find new ways to get better jobs. Implement the new process if you think something is not as good as expected.
  12. If you are bored of performing manual test, ask your boss to assign another task to you, which can be task of security testing, performance testing or even automatic testing using a new tool that will make you more excited. In the work.
  13. Read more books, newspapers, attend meetings and seminars on testing. Discover and read newspapers from various storage sources. We have a lot of good articles in topics.
  14. Is your project boring? Ask your manager to switch to another project.
  15. Is your company the reason for this boredom? Let’s switch to another company.
  16. If you still find testing a boring job, quickly switch to another job. You probably don’t like doing things that you don’t want to do.

Testing is a challenging and interesting job. To be able to love the profession, always keep that in mind.
