On this day exactly 25 years ago, Vietnam officially connected to the world Internet.

The testing of Internet connection to international units began in 1994. By the end of 1996, the Computing and Data Communication Company (VDC) under the General Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT) at two locations in Ha Noi. Noi and Ho Chi Minh City continue to test through two international ports with a speed of 64 Kb/s connecting to Sprintlink (USA).

On November 19, 1997, the Internet connection portal to the world was officially opened, when Internet service providers (ISPs) were granted licenses to provide services. This is really an important milestone, marking the time when Vietnamese people can access the Internet like any citizen in developed countries in the world.

The first message from Vietnam at this milestone was the greeting “Hello the World”, sent by VNPT. At that time, Vietnam’s Internet infrastructure still only had 64 Kb/s speed for international connections for about 300 users with two main directions: the US and Australia.

When Internet service began to be provided, the only access service was dial-up or via a landline phone line. Each time you connect to the Internet, the user’s phone line will not be able to make or receive calls.

By October 2000, the Central Office of the Party issued Directive No. 58-CT/TW on “stepping up the application and development of information technology to serve the cause of industrialization and modernization”.

Two years later, Vietnam’s Internet market began to be vibrant, with more competition when it reached about 1.8 million Internet users. Thus, after nearly 6 years of connecting to the global network, only about 4% of Vietnam’s population uses the Internet. This percentage is more than 70% today.

Broadband Internet service was introduced in Vietnam in 2003 with the introduction of Mega VNN, provided by VNPT. Not only “freeing” the phone line, ADSL connection has outstanding speed, causing the demand to explode. Internet service providers sprung up in many major cities also giving more people access to the global network.

In 2009, fiber optic Internet (FTTH) was officially launched, with superior speed ADSL and quickly replacing copper cable. The network operators also actively deployed to replace the plain cable infrastructure with fiber optic cables in the 2010s.

According to VIA, Vietnam became the country with the largest online population in ASEAN in 2013, with 16.1 million monthly Internet users. Also since the early 2010s, the domestic market has been highly appreciated for the potential of digital economic sectors, such as e-commerce.

By 2020, Vietnam will have about 45,500 ICT enterprises, bringing in about $126 billion in revenue. Opening the Internet in 1997 was slow compared to the world, but Vietnam’s Internet growth was appreciated by many parties.

“From the end of 2020 to October 2021, Internet traffic in Vietnam continues to increase by more than 30%. Many activities, especially online learning and meetings, are brought to the digital environment to create large traffic” VNPT network representative said.

Vietnam is also among the countries deploying IPv6, the new and most advanced Internet protocol in the world, with the rate of IPv6 application being in the top 10 in the world and more than double that of the ASEAN region. The digital economy is expected to reach a value of $49 billion by 2025, with an annual growth rate of 31%, with the main contribution coming from e-commerce.

However, the frequency of digital content consumption of Vietnamese people is lower than the average in Southeast Asia. Analysts say this is a sign that Vietnam still has a lot of growth potential in the long term.

The e-Conomy SEA 2021 report published in November 2021, conducted by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company, predicts that Vietnam’s Internet economy will be the second largest in Southeast Asia, reaching $220 billion in total value. goods by 2030.

Last June, the Ministry of Information and Communications (TTTT) issued a plan to implement the National Strategy for digital economy and digital society development to 2025, with a vision to 2030. In which, one development goal Infrastructure development is to cover fiber optic networks and broadband mobile networks to all villages and residential areas and rapidly increase the percentage of Internet users, especially in rural areas.

To date, cyberspace has become the fifth strategic space, digital transformation poses an urgent requirement for autonomy in cyberspace. Vietnamese businesses need to master digital infrastructure, digital platforms, and build a safe and healthy cyberspace.

VIA said that 2021 – 2025 is the accelerated phase of the National Digital Transformation Program to 2025, with a vision to 2030. The goals of this program include fiber optic broadband network infrastructure covering over 80% of households. family, the digital economy accounts for 30% of GDP and closes the digital divide.
