According to a Bloomberg report, Samsung predicts that the chip shortage crisis will begin to affect smartphone production in the next quarter. Co-CEO Koh Dong-jin said during the annual shareholder meeting in Seoul:

“The giants in the semiconductor industry, from Continental AG to Renesas Electronics Corp and Innolux Corp, have warned of a longer-than-expected shortage, occurring due to the Covid-19 epidemic, which will affect everyone. everything from car manufacturing to game consoles and mobile devices.

There is a serious imbalance between supply and demand in the IT sector globally. Despite the difficult circumstances, company leaders met with foreign partners to find a way to resolve the problem. However, it’s hard to say that the supply shortage problem has been 100% resolved ”.

“Tightened supply of Qualcomm chips made by TSMC is affecting all smartphone makers, except Apple,” an analyst at Samsung Securities told Bloomberg .

Both Xiaomi and OPPO are affected by chip shortages. Orders with Qualcomm are not sufficient, and lead times have also been increased to more than 30 weeks. That is why Xiaomi and OPPO had to plan to switch to using more MediaTek chips, which are not as appreciated as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, especially in the high-end segment.

Bloomberg notes that if this shortfall continues, it will increase the cost of electronics and mobile devices. Android smartphone manufacturers will also have to delay the launch schedule of new products. Meanwhile, it seems that only Apple doesn’t have to worry about these problems.

The reason may be that Apple is the largest and most important customer of semiconductor maker TSMC. Apple has even pre-ordered TSMC’s 3nm chip production order to stay ahead of Android rivals. As a result, Apple is still in a state of securing an adequate supply of chips to make its devices.
