Will LG really give up on the smartphone business?

Not so long ago, South Korea’s The Elec reported that LG would withdraw from the smartphone industry. This page confirmed that LG will issue a statement at the end of January. Except for the rollable LG Rollable smartphone, all LG smartphone development activities have been halted.

Shortly thereafter, Android Police contacted the Director of Global Communications for Consumer Technology at LG, Mr. Ken Hong, to find out if that was the case. And here is what Mr. Ken said:

“That rumor is completely false and has no conscience. I won’t even need to explain that rumor with any statement. ”

The Elec’s post was later removed from the site as well. That means LG still has no intention of giving up on its smartphone business.

In December, Reuters reported that LG was reorganizing its smartphone business to focus on developing high-end devices, while mid-range and low-cost devices would outsource the ODM.

This move by LG to help cut losses, after 22 consecutive quarters of the smartphone business suffered losses. LG is also hoping to better compete with Chinese smartphone makers.

However, it is true that LG is still having difficulty developing smartphones. The LG Rollable roll-screen smartphone is expected to make a new breakthrough, but it is likely to be delayed.

According to previous reports, LG Rollable is expected to be released in March. But new sources from Naver said the smartphone may be delayed until September. That is also why LG cannot introduce. Any prototype of this scrollable smartphone at CES 2021.
